High Speed Railway is experience a very huge development around the world, as well in Europe, Asia and also other regions, like USA, Middle East (Saudi Arabia, soon in Iran) and even Africa-Maghreb (Morocco).

Conference on „Prospects of high-speed rail in Poland”
On 6th May 2015 one of the most interesting conferences in the recent time was held in Warsaw. Its main theme was the future of rail in Poland. The conference on „Prospects of high-speed rail in Poland” was organised by the Association of Experts and Managers of Railway and Railway Institute (IK), in cooperation with the International Union of Railways (UIC), and under the patronage of the European Commission, Ministry of Infrastructure and Development, Polish Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure and the National Chamber of Commerce. The conference was an opportunity for the participants to become familiar with the state of work and project plans on high-speed rail (HSR) in Poland and the Czech Republic as well as for a discussion on the possibility of creating high-speed rail in Central Europe.

European Railway Agency and development of the TSIs for European High Speed Railway System

Due to historical reasons the European railway network is still a patchwork of the national systems that have been developed over the last nearly 200 years. These systems have been built to great extent independent and separate from each other. This resulted in a variety of technical, operational and organisational solutions applied in different countries, and sometimes even within one country. This diversity, although not very harmful for domestic services, constitutes a very serious barrier for the international rail traffic. This is particularly important in case of the high speed trains, where the traditional approach (change of locomotives and staff at the borders) cannot be applied.

Development of the high speed railway infrastructure in Poland

December 2014 saw commencement of the commercial operation of the first high speed trains on the Polish railways: electric multiple units class ED250 Pendolino, built for PKP Intercity by Alstom. To make it possible, several important infrastructural projects, or their important parts needed completion [8]. The ETCS level 1 automatic train control system was put in operation on the Central Trunk Line (CMK), for the first time on the Polish network. That enabled operation of the passenger trains over the CMK line at maximum speed 200 km/h. This article presents the conditions for introducing of trains running at 200 km/h in commercial operation on the Polish rail system. In particular preparation of the track infrastructure will be discussed here.

Financial effectiveness of high speed railways in Poland

In the process of taking investment decisions an evaluation of the effectiveness in planned actions is a crucial factor. In the article costs and benefits of constructing the high speed railway system were presented. On this base the conclusions concerning the appropriateness of the high speed railway system development in Poland were expressed.

Central Trunk Line (CMK) 200 km/h. Traffic, timetable and operations

On 14 December 2014, regular connections of ED250 (Pendolino) with a maximum speed of 200 km/h were launched in Poland on the CMK line. PKP Intercity, as the operator, acquired 20 EMU produced by Alstom for connections between Warsaw and Trojmiasto on the north and to Krakow, Katowice and Wroclaw in the south. The start of this connections was preceded by a vehicle approval processes and certification of modernized railway lines, led by the Railway Institute, as a notified body.

High Speed Railway Programme for Poland. Present status and perspectives

Launching high speed transport on the CMK line is an introduction to the realisation of the programme of building high speed line in Poland. Until the end of 2015 the necessary feasibility studies for the requirements of high speed railway construction programme will be performed. The last part of research is the analysis of the optimal connection of the future high speed line Warsaw – Lodz – Poznan/ Wroclaw with Berlin and Prague. The contractor of the study is supposed to choose the best options for the construction of new lines from Poznan to Berlin and from Wroclaw to Prague. The complete feasibility study will be carried out on the basis of the presented proposals on the second stage of works. In this way, the liabilities resulting from the inclusion of the future line to the new trans-European transport network will be accomplished.

The Concept of High Speed Connection between Poland and Czech Republic

One of the main ideas of The European Community is the idea of so called ‘four freedoms’: freedom of flow of services, goods, people and capital within the federate countries. With regard to this assumption, there have been works on transport system integration and liquidation of barriers that constitute serious impediments resulting from historic, geographical and political conditions. The amendment of Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) in 2013 is one of the latest indications of the European Community being interested in this subject.

Łódź as a future HSR TEN-T node

Łódź, a post-industrial city, is the third largest city in Poland. Currently the city runs a wide range of important investments aimed at reversing the negative trends connected with unemployment, depopulation and city center degradation. Along with neighboring cities and municipalities, Łódź agglomeration reaches a population of more than one million inhabitants and is strong metropolitan, academic and cultural center with considerable economic potential being a center for BPO industries, logistics and Household Appliances. Łódź is located in the center of Poland, at the intersection of historical and contemporary rebuilt transportation routes. It is also a focal point on the map of the region of Central and Eastern Europe. Distance from Łódź to Warsaw is 120 km, 460 km to Berlin, 540 km to Vienna, 740 km to Hamburg, to Paris – 1110 km, to Moscow – 1430 km and to Rome – 1690 km.
